Questions
The short version
We never sell your data
The services that run Lingium get only what each one needs. Authorities get data only when the law requires it.
We do not keep your recordings
Audio from speaking exercises is deleted from our servers once it is scored.
You stay in control
Get a copy of your data, or have it corrected or deleted. You can delete your account at any time.
Protected by EU law
Lingium is based in Sweden and follows the GDPR. Your data is mainly stored in the EU.
This summary helps you find your way. The full policy below is what applies.
02The data we collect
These are the kinds of personal data we collect. We collect only what we need to run your account and your courses.
Account data
Your name, email address, password, date of birth and profile picture. We ask your date of birth to confirm you are 16 or older. Your password is stored hashed, never as plain text.
Google sign-in
If you sign up with Google, we receive your name, email address and profile picture from Google. We never see your Google password.
Learning activity
Your course progress, the chapters and activities you complete, your activity scores, the answers and texts you submit, your chats with the AI coach, and the XP, streaks and badges you earn.
Profile and social data
Other learners can find you by name and see your profile picture, XP and place on the weekly leaderboard. Friends you add can also see your profile and play quiz battles with you. In your privacy settings you choose who can see your profile, which details it shows, such as your level, badges and streaks, and whether you appear in search and on leaderboards. None of this is shown for learners under 18: they get no social features, and other learners cannot find them.
Organization accounts
If you learn through your school or organization, its admins see reports on your progress: the courses assigned to you, your activity and results, and your skills. Ask your school or organization if you have questions about how it uses these reports.
Payment data
Transaction IDs and your billing address. Card details are handled by our payment provider and never stored by us.
Technical data
Your IP address, browser type and version, operating system, device type and screen resolution, and error reports when something goes wrong in the app.
Usage data
The pages you visit, the features you use, how long a session lasts and the site that sent you to us.
Messages to us
Support requests, feedback and survey answers you send us.
03How we use your data
- To provide the service. We create and manage your account, deliver your courses and track your progress.
- To show content for your level. We use your course level and your progress to show the chapters and practice that fit where you are.
- To run the social features. We show your profile, XP and leaderboard place to other learners and run quiz battles with your friends, if you are 18 or older.
- To process payments. We handle subscriptions, invoices and refund requests.
- To improve Lingium. We look at how features are used, fix bugs and build new features.
- To keep in touch. We send account emails and security alerts, and our newsletter only if you agree to it.
- To comply with the law. We meet our legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.
04Our legal basis
The GDPR lets us use your data only when we have a legal reason. We rely on four.
Contract
To create your account, deliver your courses and process payments.
Consent
For marketing emails and optional cookies. You can withdraw your consent at any time. See our cookie policy.
Legitimate interest
To improve the service, prevent fraud and keep Lingium secure.
Legal obligation
To keep tax and accounting records and meet other legal requirements.
05Who we share data with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it with the services that help us run Lingium, and each one gets only what it needs. Providers that process data on our behalf are bound by contract to use it only on our instructions and in line with the GDPR.
Hosts our servers and the data stored on them.
Delivers the site and protects it from attacks. It handles technical data such as your IP address.
Text you write, such as exercise answers, written practice and messages to the AI conversation partner, is sent to produce grading, feedback and replies. Recordings from some speaking exercises are sent to be transcribed. In AI voice conversations, your voice is streamed so the AI conversation partner can understand you and answer out loud.
Audio you record in speaking and pronunciation exercises is sent to be transcribed and scored.
Carries the video and sound of live 1-on-1 sessions with an instructor, if you book one.
Processes payments for paid plans. Your card details go to Stripe and are never stored by us.
Processes purchases made in our Android app, once it is released.
Receives a device token to deliver notifications, and anonymized crash reports so we can fix faults.
Confirms who you are when you choose to sign in with Google.
Delivers our emails to you, such as account and security messages, and holds the messages you send us.
Receives technical error reports when something goes wrong on our servers, so we can find and fix the fault.
We also share data with authorities when the law requires it. What other learners and your school or organization can see is described in section 02.
06How long we keep your data
We keep personal data only as long as we need it, then delete it.
Account data
Kept while your account is open. Deleted within 30 days after you ask us to delete your account.
Learning records
Kept while your account is open, so your certificates can still be verified.
Payment records
Kept for 7 years, as Swedish accounting law requires.
AI coach chats
Deleted automatically after 12 months, or together with your account if you delete it sooner.
Usage data
Records of your visits, including your IP address and browser, are deleted automatically after 400 days.
Server logs
Deleted automatically within 90 days.
Voice recordings
Held only while your speech is being scored or transcribed, then deleted from our servers. We do not keep them.
You can delete your account at any time on the delete account page.
07Your rights
Under the GDPR, you have these rights:
Access
Get a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
Correction
Have data that is wrong or incomplete corrected.
Erasure
Have your data deleted, also called the right to be forgotten.
Restriction
Ask us to limit how we use your data in certain cases.
Portability
Receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
Objection
Object to processing based on our legitimate interest.
Withdraw consent
At any time. It does not affect processing that happened before.
How to use them
Email bilgi@lingium.com and tell us which right you want to use.
08Transfers outside the EU/EEA
Your data is mainly stored on servers in the EU/EEA. Several of the services listed in section 05 are run by companies based in the United States, such as OpenAI, Google and Stripe, so some of your data may be processed there.
When data is transferred outside the EU/EEA, we make sure appropriate safeguards are in place, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
09Children
You must be 16 or older to create an account. This also applies if you learn through a school or organization. We ask your date of birth when you sign up, including when you sign up with Google, and we do not create an account for anyone younger.
Learners aged 16 and 17 keep full access to their courses but get no social features: no public profile, leaderboards, friends or quiz battles, and other learners cannot find them.
If you think a child under 16 has given us their data, email bilgi@lingium.com and we will delete it promptly.
10How we protect your data
We use technical and organizational measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit (TLS), hashed passwords, access controls and regular security reviews. No system is completely secure, so we cannot promise absolute security.
11Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make important changes, we put the new date on this policy and tell registered users by email or with a notification in the app. If you keep using Lingium after a change is published, the updated policy applies.
