Getting started
What is free, which languages and levels there are, and where to begin.
Start learning freeNo card needed.
01Is Lingium free?
Yes. Every course is free to join, and you don't need a card. Without a plan you get all 35 courses and a little AI practice every day: 5 voice conversations and 30 chat replies. Paid plans raise those limits and add extras, such as certificates.
02Which languages and levels can I learn?
Seven languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Swedish and Turkish. Each one has five courses that follow the CEFR, from A1 for beginners up to C1, the top level.
5 levels in each of 7 languages: 35 courses.
03Where should I start?
There is no placement test, so you choose. New to the language? Start at A1. Know some already? Join the level that feels right. Every course is free to join, so if it turns out too easy or too hard, simply join another level.
04Can I use Lingium in my own language?
Yes. Instructions and explanations come in your own language, and the website is available in 7 languages. Switch it with the language menu in the header or at the bottom of the page.
05Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Lingium works in any modern browser on your phone, tablet or computer, so there is nothing to install. An Android app is coming soon.
Learning
How chapters work, the kinds of activities, and what you need for speaking practice.
See how it works01How does a chapter work?
There are two kinds. Topic chapters teach the words and phrases for a theme, then have you listen, speak and write, and every one has an AI voice conversation. Grammar chapters explain one point, then let you practice it in three steps.
Topic chapter
- New words and phrases
- Listening and speaking
- AI voice conversation
- Free writing
Grammar chapter
- Explanation
- 1Fill in the gaps
- 2Put the words in order
- 3Dictation
02What kinds of activities are there?
There are 15 activity types, so new words and grammar come back in different ways until they stay. Here are some of them.
03Do I need a microphone?
Yes, for the speaking activities below. Your browser asks for permission the first time you use one. Everything else, from flashcards to dictation, works without a microphone.
04How do I see my progress?
XP, streaks and a daily goal show how much you practice. Your progress is also measured against CEFR can-do statements, so you can see what you are able to do in the language. The detailed can-do view is on the Essential and Pass plans.
AI conversation
What your AI conversation partner does, how often you can talk to it, and the feedback you get.
01What can the AI conversation partner do?
You talk to an animated avatar out loud, in real time, and it answers you by voice. There is one in every topic chapter. The AI also replies when you answer a free-speaking prompt.
Plus an AI coachOn Essential and Pass you also get the Lingium narrator, an AI coach you can chat with.
02How many AI conversations can I have each day?
It depends on your plan. These are the limits per day.
03Will I get feedback on my speaking and writing?
Yes, on every plan. Listen and repeat checks your speech word by word, speech cards give you a star rating, and free writing gets a basic automatic score.
The Pass plan adds detailed AI feedback on your writing and speaking, and pronunciation feedback sound by sound.
01How much do the paid plans cost?
There are three, all billed monthly in US dollars. There are no yearly plans.
02How do I pay?
By card. Payments are handled by Stripe, and your plan is billed once a month in US dollars.
03Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. When you cancel, your plan keeps working until the end of the month you have paid for, and then it stops renewing. Every course stays free to join afterwards.
04Do I need a paid plan for a certificate?
To download one, yes. Lingium course certificates can be checked by anyone online, and downloading yours is included in every paid plan, starting with Basic.
Live sessions
Talk 1-on-1 with an instructor, alongside your AI practice.
See plans and session credits01What are live sessions?
Twenty-minute video sessions, 1-on-1 with an instructor, right in your browser. They are a chance to practice with a real person as well as with the AI.
02What do I need to book one?
Any paid plan, plus session credits. Each session uses one credit, and credits come in three packs.
Unused credits expire 3 months after your last booking.
Account and privacy
Who can sign up, how to delete your account, and what happens to your data.
Read the privacy policy01How old do I need to be?
16 or older. Learners aged 16 and 17 get every course, but not the social features, such as friends, quiz battles and leaderboards.
02How do I delete my account?
Go to the delete account page and enter the email address of your account. We delete it and write to you when it is done. This removes your profile, your learning and progress, and the AI conversations kept with your account. A paid plan bought on the website is canceled with it. Deleting cannot be undone.
03How do you handle my data and voice recordings?
Our privacy policy explains what we collect, why we collect it and how long we keep it. We do not keep your recordings: audio from speaking exercises is deleted from our servers once it is scored. For any question about your data, email bilgi@lingium.com.
01Can my school or organization use Lingium?
Yes. There is no self-serve sign-up yet, so we set up your organization with you. Contact us and tell us about your learners.
02What can we do once we are set up?
- Invite learners, or let them join with a code
- Put learners into groups
- Assign courses to learners or whole groups
- See reports on learners, courses and skills
- Send extra practice to the learners who need it
